What data we process

Emails you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address, name (if given) and the content of your message. We use this only to reply and, where relevant, to consider your story idea or correction. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries.

Message composer. The composer on our contact page runs entirely in your browser. It does not send or store anything on our servers; text is only copied or downloaded at your request.

Server logs. Our hosting provider may record technical data such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, to keep the site secure and working. Legal basis: legitimate interest in security. Logs are kept for a limited period, normally no longer than 30 days.

How long we keep data

Correspondence is kept for up to 24 months after the conversation ends, unless it relates to a published correction or article, in which case we may keep it as an editorial record.

Sharing

We do not sell personal data. We share it only with service providers that host our website and email, under contracts requiring them to protect it, or where the law requires. Some providers may process data outside the UK; where they do, appropriate safeguards such as UK adequacy regulations or standard contractual clauses apply.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, and to data portability where applicable. Email us to exercise them. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
